Lilburn, GA - Mike Roe, just returned this week from the Filmmaker's Intensive held in St. Petersburg, Florida. This was a 2 week training class consisting of less than 20 students from all over the world learning from various experts in their field. Co-founder Jem Schofield, of Buttons Productions and theC47, teamed up with Meisner expert Larry Silverberg to offer one of the most rigurous filmmaker training classes. Many experts from various disciplines were brought in throughout the 2 weeks. Actor/Director Skip Sudduth (works include CSI NY, Criminal Minds, ER, & Third Watch) was brought in to teach on directing and directing actors. Andy Beinen, co writer of Academy winning "Boys Don't Cry", taught on screenwriting. Philip Bloom was there to help with documentary style filmmaking and cinematography as well as Giuseppe Malpasso. Orlando Luna from Apple taught on post production workflow and color. And Jamie Hitchings, professor, editor and visual artist, taught on editing for short form narrative work. DP/Camera Assistant/DIT Matt Porwoll was on hand the entire 2 weeks to help Jem with running the Filmmaker's Intensive, but also help the students in whatever capacity was needed.
During the narrative portion, students were given neutral dialogue that could not be changed but had to create a story around it. Then the students were divided up into groups of 3. Each person in the group was given an area of responsibility even though they ultimately ended up wearing many hats to complete the project. Mike was assigned as the writer and editor for the project but also served as Sound Designer, Asst. Director, 1st AC, Grip, Gaffer, etc... We were assigned two wonderful actors to work with: Meagan Eversmeyer and Brent Bauer.
Below is the film written by Mike and produced by his group.
